day 152: wearing many hats

| |

A recent trip to verdant (but chilly) Oregon inspired these green stripey hats in worsted weight, mystery brand wool, silk and alpaca blend yarns. I don’t usually knit from a pattern for a basic hat, but here’s what I did:

Basic pattern:

  • Cast on 80 (88) sts on a 16″ circular needle and join without twisting.
  • Knit in K2 P2 rib for 4 inches or as desired for brim.
  • Knit until hat measures 5-6 inches or desired slouchiness.
    • Maximum slouchiness recommended for Portland travel.
    • Alternate colors as desired. I used a Fibonacci pattern for these: 1,1,2,3,5,8,13, etc.
  • Decrease
    • Row 1: knit two together (K2tog), K 9 (10); repeat to end of round.
    • Row 2: knit.
    • Row 3: K2tog, K 8 (9); repeat to end of round.
    • Row 4: knit.
    • Row 5: K2tog, K 7 (8); repeat to end of round.
    • Row 6: knit.
    • Row 7-end: repeat in pattern until 8 stitches remain.
  • Cut thread with 8″ tail; with yarn needle, thread tail through remaining stitches.
  • Weave in ends.
  • Take a walk in Forest Park, down Hawthorne Street, to the Oregon Museum of Contemporary Craft, or Powell’s World of Books.
